Severe Tire Cracking Michelin LTX

More About Ozone & Weather-Cracking in Tires

Tire cracking, also known as ozone, weather-cracking, and dry-rot can become a problem if left unchecked.

By far the #1 contributor to tire cracking is how often you drive. That’s because tire rubber contains antiozonant, an additive that prevents and slows the aging process. (Antiozonant is also what makes your tires turn brown, also known as “tire blooming“.)

But antiozonant only works while the tires are being used. That’s why tire cracking is most commonly found on trailers, motorhomes, classic, collector, and performance cars, grandma’s Taurus, and the church van.

If your tires have signs of cracking or dry-rot, it’s best to get them checked out asap. Stop by your local tire shop or send me a picture of your tires for an opinion.

There are degrees of tire cracking.

Light sidewall, shoulder, and tread cracking is considered normal wear and tear, usually caused by age and overexposure to environmental conditions or harsh cleaning products.

Cosmetic ozone or weather cracks usually pose no threat to a tire’s performance or structure, most tires will wear out before tire cracking becomes a problem

But manufacturing errors can also cause abnormal tire cracking. If your tires are less than 3-years old and showing significant cracks, you should be eligible for a manufacturer’s warranty covering defects, workmanship, and materials. It’s always best to contact the tire manufacturer’s customer service department directly.showing severity of tire cracking

Most tire manufacturers warranty tires against defects for 6 years. They also recommend replacing your tires every 6 years, whether they’re worn out or not. If in doubt, get an opinion from your local tire shop before you contact the manufacturer.

I use Michelin’s “Ozone or Weather Cracking Visual Tool” to explain to customers what is considered minor cosmetic ozone and weather cracking, or more severe cracking that could impact the tire’s safety and structure.

Steps you can take to protect your tires.

Cleaning – Use a special tire and wheel cleaner every time you wash your car. I use Dark Fury at the shop because it’s awesome at dissolving brake dust and safe to use on all wheels and tires.

Protection – It’s ok to use a tire protectant, as long as it is not silicone or petroleum-based. These types of tire-dressings accelerate tire cracking and dry-rot.

I use Wizard’s because it’s a water-based dressing with no residue. (I love this stuff because it doesn’t “sling”, meaning the product stay’s on your tires, not on your car).

Bottom line? Tire cracking can be serious and it’s best to get it checked out asap! Stop by your local tire shop or send me a picture of your tires for an opinion.

Check out some of the pictures people have sent me of their tire cracking –

Electric Vehicle Tires Explained

Electric vehicle tires are designed specifically for electric vehicles.

For example, the Tesla Model 3 comes with 235/40R19 Continental ProContact RX tires with ContiSilent technology. The tire has a unique tire design, with a layer of foam on the inside of the tire to dampen road noise.

While this feature wouldn’t make much difference to road-noise in a gas-guzzler, on a Tesla Model 3 it makes all the difference.

How to Increase Electric Vehicle Tire Life.

Electric vehicles wear tires fast and they’re expensive!

Keep your tires at the right pressure and check the alignment yearly.

The best way to extend the life of your tires is just good driving habits and common sense. As tempting as it may be with all that smooth instant torque, avoid super hard acceleration, cornering, and braking.

Are EV Tires Expensive?

Yes. We recommend replacing your EV tires with the same ones that came with the vehicle. Don’t roll the dice on the features you bought the car for, like quietness, durability, and efficiency.

About Kenwood Tire

About Kenwood Tire

At Kenwood Tire & Auto Service today, we’re focused on creating a memorable experience for our customers.

But the Kenwood Tire story started in 1963 when Ken Wood, tired of selling tires from the back of his truck, bought the West Bridgewater Public Library, which was due to be demolished.

He took it off the town’s hands for a buck, but the historic building, built in the 1850s needed to be moved.

December 28, 1962, was moving day – Students, business people, and other curious onlookers lined the Rt.104 as the building slowly made its way, about 1/2 mile, to its new location at the corner of South Main and Ash Streets in West Bridgewater.

As you can see, Kenwood Tire is not your average tire store – Ken Wood showed me the tire business, but more importantly taught me customer service; he always believed in “treating customers as he would want to be treated” and almost 60 years later that’s how we roll!

A New Generation of Cargo Van Tires

Say hello to the new MICHELIN® Agilis® CrossClimate ®, the specialty cargo van tire that’s built to handle heavy working conditions on your RAM Promaster, Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, and Chevy Express van.

Frequently asked questions about C-Metic (cargo van) tires:

  1. What is the difference between the MICHELIN® AGILIS® C-Metric sizes vs. the LT sizes? The C-metric is the European equivalent of the LT-metric, describing special cargo van tires that have a higher load rating and higher air pressure than passenger car tires.
  2. How does the MICHELIN® AGILIS® CROSSCLIMATE® tire perform vs. the MICHELIN® Defender® LTX® M/S tire? The MICHELIN® AGILIS® CROSSCLIMATE® tire is optimized for commercial usage—which means usage by businesses carrying heavy loads, high-duty cycles, frequent towing, and constant or near-constant driving. The MICHELIN® Defender® LTX® M/S tire is optimized for personal usage, including daily commuting, running errands, occasional trips to the home improvement store, tailgating and camping.
  3. Why is the MICHELIN® AGILIS® CROSSCLIMATE® tire offered in two different tread designs? The MICHELIN® AGILIS® CROSSCLIMATE® C-Metric cargo van tire was designed in Europe specifically for the European style vans that are also offered in the North American market. The C-Metric is a directional tread pattern.
  4. Is the MICHELIN® AGILIS® CROSSCLIMATE® tire backed by a mileage guarantee and, if not, does the MICHELIN® Promise Plan™ apply (30-day ride, 3-year flat tire assist)? Cargo van tires are not backed by a mileage guarantee; however, Michelin will offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee from the date of purchase.

3M headlamp lens restoration service

3M Headlight Lens Restoration Service

There’s more to your headlights than meets the eye.

If you’re having trouble seeing the road and curb at night, don’t put it down to aging eyes…look at your headlight lenses. Can you see the actual bulb, or is the lens cloudy, yellow, or scratched?

Cloudy, opaque headlight lenses are a common problem in today’s cars because most headlight lenses are made of clear plastic, not glass. Years of exposure to grit, dust, ozone, chemicals, and sunlight turn plastic headlight lenses cloudy, diffusing the bulb’s light and reducing the light that actually hits the target by up to 80%!

We offer a professional headlight restoration service using the 3M Headlight Lens Restoration System. For about $75, we remove years of road-grime and sun damage, before polishing your headlight lenses to let the right light shine through!

The 3M Headlight Lens Restoration System is probably the best bang-for-the-buck service we offer. See what it did for this 2003 Toyota Corolla!

Let the light shine through with our professional 3M Headlight Restoration Service for only $75. Or get the 3M Headlight Restoration System and do-it-yourself in about 1/2 an hour with a power drill and spray bottle.

Now your headlight lenses are looking good again, don’t forget the bulbs! Check out the SYLVANIA SilverStar Ultra headlight bulbs for a brighter and wider illuminated field of view at night when compared to your original bulbs.

If you need help with the installation, let us know.

Tire Blooming Brown Tires

Brown Tires? Your Tires Are Blooming!

Brown tires are not a big deal unless you like your tires black, cosmetically speaking. Some customers couldn’t care what color their tires are, others it’s a problem.

Tire Blooming and tire browning are common on vehicles that don’t get driven much.

That’s because tire manufacturers use an additive in the tire’s rubber called antiozonant, that protects against dry-rot, ozone, and weather-cracking and turns a brown color when exposed to oxygen. This is also known as tire blooming.

The severity of browning/tire blooming varies is amplified when tires are used occasionally, like these high-performance Michelin Pilot PS2 tires on a Corvette.

Tire Blooming Brown Tires

The brown residue left by the antiozonant stains the sidewalls, so if you want to keep your tires looking good, you’ll need to wash and protect them.

I’m currently using Dark Fury to clean wheels and tires, Mix it 3-1, and use a spray bottle. A nice soft brush helps too.

Tire dressings are an individual choice, but I’m not a fan of shiny tires. If you are, then there are two types of tire dressings – Water-based like Wizards Tire & Vinyl Shine. that won’t harm the tire and contain UV protection, and solvent-based. I recommend staying away from solvent-based tire dressings because I’ve seen them accelerate tire cracking.

If your brown tires have got you down, I do recommend filing a customer satisfaction warranty claim with the tire manufacturer directly. Tire blooming is not usually considered a manufacturer’s defect, but a cosmetic condition not affecting the performance or safety of the tire. Most of the time tire blooming is not covered by a manufacturer’s warranty, but it’s worth a try!
